The vast majority of households in Benin use wood and charcoal for cooking. The Charbon Vert project is establishing a value chain for more sustainable charcoal made from organic waste.

To this end, organic waste from agriculture and the processing of agricultural products is converted into charcoal. The biochar obtained in this way is a sustainable and affordable alternative to charcoal for households, small processing businesses and restaurants.

The project creates new jobs and income opportunities, upgrades waste products and reduces deforestation. With biochar, it also produces a by-product that can be used for soil improvement in agriculture.
