The laws in force in El Salvador offer workers little protection in the event of incapacity for work, abusive working conditions or unjustified dismissals. That is why trade unions and women's organisations, including several of our partner organisations and the trade union confederation, have joined forces to form the CEDM network.

Together, they are campaigning for better working conditions, higher minimum wages and progressive labour laws. They have already succeeded in improving maternity protection, which benefits more than one million women.

In recent years, there have been further important successes:

  • In 2021, thanks to the persistent efforts of CEDM, the minimum wage in El Salvador was increased by 20 per cent, benefiting 320,000 textile workers. In addition, several large textile factories signed an agreement against sexual harassment.
  • In 2022, El Salvador ratified five conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), including No. 183 on maternity protection and No. 190 on the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work.
